Why Is My Subwoofer Humming? 5 Causes and How to Fix Them

A humming subwoofer is uniquely annoying: the hum lives in exactly the frequency range the sub is built to reproduce, so you feel it as much as hear it. It's also one of the most common hum complaints in home audio — because subs are usually the one component plugged in across the room, on a different outlet, connected by a long cable. That combination is a recipe for ground loops.

Here's how to figure out which of the five common causes you have, and the fix for each.

First: isolate where the hum enters

Unplug the RCA/LFE cable from the back of the subwoofer while it's powered on.

  • Hum stops → the noise is coming in through the signal cable. It's a ground loop or cable problem (causes 1–3 below).
  • Hum continues → the sub is generating it internally or picking it up from power (causes 4–5).

Cause 1: A ground loop between the sub and receiver

The classic setup: receiver plugged in near the TV, sub plugged into a wall outlet across the room. Two outlets, two ground paths, one loop — amplified through a 10-inch driver.

Fix: Power the subwoofer from the same outlet or power strip as your receiver, even if it means running an extension. If that's impractical, give the stray ground current a dedicated drain path with a grounding cable — the clip termination attaches to a chassis screw on the sub's plate amp, and the RCA version can occupy the sub's unused input. Cause 2: The subwoofer cable is picking up interference

Subwoofer cables are often the longest signal run in the room, snaking behind furniture and across power cords — every inch is an antenna.

Fix: Re-route the cable away from power cords (cross at 90° where unavoidable), and use a shielded cable of the right length rather than coiling up excess. Coiled slack makes a tidy loop antenna.

Cause 3: Cable TV or satellite coax in the chain

If your system includes a cable box, the coax line's ground (bonded somewhere outside your house) frequently sits at a different potential than your electrical ground. The hum often appears only when the cable box is connected.

Fix: Test by disconnecting the coax at the wall. If the hum vanishes, add an inline coax ground isolator on the antenna line — they're inexpensive and don't affect the picture.

Cause 4: Auto-on circuitry or amp fault

If the hum continues with no signal cable attached, listen to its character. A soft hiss or faint hum at the driver with your ear close is often just the plate amp's noise floor — normal. A loud mechanical or electrical hum that varies as the sub warms up points to failing capacitors in the plate amplifier, common in subs over a decade old.

Fix: Try the sub on a different circuit in another room. If it still hums loudly on its own, the plate amp needs service.

Cause 5: Dimmer switches and appliances on the circuit

Dimmers, refrigerator compressors, and HVAC blowers inject noise into household wiring that a subwoofer's amp can reproduce audibly — often a buzz that comes and goes.

Fix: Note when the buzz appears. If it tracks a dimmer or appliance, move the sub to a different circuit or replace the offending dimmer with an LED-rated one.

The five-minute version

  1. Pull the signal cable — does the hum stop?
  2. If yes: same power strip as the receiver, then a grounding cable if needed
  3. If the system includes cable TV: test with the coax disconnected
  4. If no: test the sub alone on another circuit
  5. Fix the cheapest suspect first — it's usually the right one
