The Zenith Radio Model 705 was released in the summer of 1933 as part of the 700 series, which debuted for the 1934 season. Despite its simple appearance, the set is visually appealing thanks to its intricate marquetry inlays and unique photofinish upper band. Additionally, the right escutcheon and matching left nameplate give the impression of a perpetual wink from the set, which stands proudly on the shelf.
Based on research by Cones and Bryant in their book "Zenith - The Early Years", the initial cost of the 705 model was $24.95. However, after reviewing early newspaper promotions, the lowest observed purchasing price was $26.95, in July of 1933. Later in the year, the selling price increased to $29.95 in the Eastern market and up to $36.50 in the Western market.
The 705 model of Zenith Radio runs on AC power and covers the standard broadcast band. Its six tubes are: 57 (mixer), 56 (oscillator), 58 (intermediate frequency amplifier), 2A6 (second detector/automatic volume control/first audio frequency), 59 (power amplifier), and 80 (rectifier) - providing optimal performance.
This Zenith radio features butt walnut and imported marquetry inlay, providing a rich tone that rivals larger sets in quality and volume. With a six-tube superheterodyne set and a full-size dynamic speaker, it delivers powerful, full-bodied sound. The cabinet is elegantly finished with a solid walnut top and fluted ends, making it a great addition to your home as a second or third radio. Have you listened to its impressive sound?
